Fraud & Scam Awareness
Scams can happen to anyone
If you receive a call, text, email, or message that doesn’t seem quite right, please know you’re not alone. Scammers often try to rush or worry people into quick decisions. Taking a moment to slow down can make all the difference. If something doesn’t feel right, give us a call – your local Lafayette State Bank team is always here to help.
What is fraud or a scam?
Fraud and scams happen when someone tries to trick you into sending money or sharing personal or account information. They may pretend to be your bank, a company you trust, or even someone you care about.
Common warning signs
Be cautious if someone:
Pressures you to act immediately
Asks for passwords, PINs, or one‑time verification codes
Requests payment by gift cards, wire transfer, or payment apps
Tells you to keep the situation secret
If it doesn’t feel right, trust that feeling.
Romance Scams
Romance scams happen when someone builds an emotional connection online — often through dating apps, social media, or text messages — and then asks for money.
Common signs include:
Quickly expressing strong feelings or love
Avoiding in‑person meetings or video calls
Claiming an emergency, medical issue, or investment opportunity
Asking for money, gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto
Saying the relationship must stay private
Being targeted by a romance scam is not a sign of weakness or poor judgment. These scams are designed to take advantage of trust, hope, and human connection. If you’re unsure or uncomfortable, it’s okay to pause and ask for help.
Will the bank ever ask for my password or codes?
No. Lafayette State Bank will never ask for:
Online banking passwords
One‑time passcodes
PINs or full debit/credit card numbers
If someone asks for this information, it is a scam.
How can I help prevent fraud?
Simple steps can make a big difference:
Take your time — don’t rush financial decisions
Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person
Verify requests by contacting us directly
Never share passwords, PINs, or codes
Monitor your account regularly and set up alerts
When in doubt, pause and ask first.
What should I do if I’m unsure or think I’ve been scammed?
Please reach out immediately — we’re here to help.
Do not send money or click suspicious links
Contact Lafayette State Bank right away
Review recent account activity and change passwords
Acting quickly may help limit loss.
